And the Gemini — that’s the Canadian Emmy — for costume design goes to …
The Don Cherry Story.
Yes, the CBC’s latest hockey-related project is a two-part TV movie on the life of Grapes, written by his son, Tim. Shooting is expected to start this summer.
“We’re trying to find out if Brad Pitt can play the leading role,” Cherry said, making that old joke for the Toronto Star. “Maybe George Clooney could play me in the later years.”
It’s actually about Cherry pre-”Hockey Night in Canada,” when he played in the minors and coached in the NHL, and his relationship with his late wife, Rose. It ends 24 years ago when he met his other significant other, Ron MacLean, so stay tuned for the sequel.
“It’s as much about Mom’s journey with Dad as it as about Dad’s life,” Tim Cherry said. “I’ve been bugging Dad for years to do this. I don’t know why he caved this time.”
He added the story also will show his father’s faults — what, faults?
“I was very selfish with the family,” Grapes said. “That’s the one thing that, after I read it all, I thought I was sort of a selfish guy. I don’t know how Rose put up with me.”
