New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery lacerated his spleen in Tuesday night’s playoff game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and has been ruled out for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team announced at its practice facility in Greenburgh, N.Y. on Wednesday.

Avery was accompanied to a local hospital following the Rangers’ 5-3 loss by Dr. Andrew Feldman, the team’s physician and orthopedic surgeon, where it was detected through a CT scan that he had ruptured his spleen during the game.

It is unknown at what point of the game the laceration occurred. The Rangers said Avery walked into the hospital on his own. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Avery played 19 shifts for 14:34 of ice time Tuesday night. He had two hits and three shots on goal. In eight playoff games he averaged 14:14 of ice time per game with four goals, three assists, a plus-3 rating and 19 hits.

Avery was the center of controversy in the first round against the New Jersey Devils when after waving his stick in front of goalie Martin Brodeur’s face the NHL amended its rules on goalie interference.
