Gainey seeks upgrade at forward
Habs post-mortem. GM hopes to add power boost up front
Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey has a reputation for playing it close to the vest and yesterday’s post-mortem on the 2007-08 season was no exception.
Gainey spoke in generalities, although he said the Canadiens would be shopping for another forward - if they went shopping.
“We’ll be open to trying to find another forward,” said Gainey, who has been trying for several years to land that elusive power forward.
Gainey is hoping he can keep the core intact. There are 14 regulars under contract and he’ll
attempt to sign versatile Mark Streit before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
He’s also hopeful restricted free-agent Andrei Kostitsyn will not heed the siren call of a rich contract in Russia.
“We’ve had three years with Andrei, his brother is here (and) I think he’s comfortable here,” Gainey said. “He showed great improvement and we’ll be working hard to retain him.”
The Habs won’t try as hard to keep Michael Ryder, but Gainey defended the former 30-goal scorer, saying his production dropped because his role changed.
